Services Provided
Counseling
for Victims, Families, and Friends
A
sexual assault victim coordinator has been
trained in working with sexual assault victims to help you in the
recovery
process. This includes providing the victim with information
on their
rights, informing the victim of their options, being supportive of the
victim’s choices, referring the victim to other services that
can help,
and being there to listen and be supportive. We can also
answer questions
and provide support for family and friends.
Assistance
with Medical Help
If
you have been sexually assaulted you
may need medical care for possible injuries, pregnancy, or contracted
venereal
disease. Also, if you decide to visit the hospital up to 72
hours after
the sexual assault then a nurse trained to help victims can perform an
exam in
order to gather evidence. You do not have to report the crime
to the
police even after you have this exam. This is your choice to
make.
Assistance
with the Legal System
The
Family Support Center can not provide
you with legal advice, but we can provide you with support as you work
your way
through the legal process. We can accompany you during police
reporting
and court proceedings.
Outreach
and Awareness
A
sexual assault victim coordinator will
be giving presentations and passing out information on the services
that are
provided at the Family Support Center
and educating the public on sexual assault. If you know of an
organization that would benefit from this information please refer them
to the
coordinator.
Support
Groups
A
sexual assault victim coordinator will
offer support groups for victims, families, or friends. These
groups are
implemented by a trained coordinator and are offered based on
need.
Please call to check availability if you or someone you know would like
to join
a support group. New groups can be formed if there is enough
interest.
