Sexual Assault: Myth vs Facts

What to do if you or someone you know is sexually assaulted or raped in the last 72 hours

  • Seek medical attention as soon as possible. Do not destroy or change your clothing. Do not clean up, shower, or douche. Call a sexual assault victims coordinator.
  • What to do if you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted or raped in the last 72 hours or in the past…
  • Believe someone if they tell you they have been raped or sexually assaulted.
  • Spend more time listening than talking.
  • Seek out counseling options.

What are the mental health concerns?

  • If you or someone you know has been raped then one or more of the symptoms could be affecting you or someone that you love.
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
    Symptoms include flashbacks or nightmares, emotional numbing or feeling of being detached or estranged, and anxiety that interferes with daily life.
  • Depression
    Symptoms include sad mood, loss of interest or pleasure in activities that once were enjoyed, change or appetite or weightloss, difficulty sleeping or oversleeping, energy loss, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.
  • Other issues that could affect someone that has been sexually assaulted could include pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV and AIDS, alcohol and drug dependency, and eating disorders
